A Pillar of the Community and a Family’s Guiding Light: Remembering the Life and Legacy of a Beloved Grandfather

Family shapes our understanding of the world, teaching us the foundational values of love, resilience, and compassion that guide us through life. For one family, that guiding light was embodied by a remarkable patriarch—a man whose booming laughter, unwavering devotion, and gentle strength left an indelible mark on everyone he encountered. Before passing away on the morning of March 14, 2017, he lived a life defined by public service, deep faith, and unconditional love for his family and community.

A Life Rooted in Compassion and Community Service

Long before he faced the trials of a progressive, life-limiting terminal illness, the man known affectionately as "Grandad" was a cornerstone of his community. He had raised his son, providing a stable home and enveloping generations with warmth and compassion. Those who knew him recall a man who opened both his doors and his heart, ensuring that love was not only felt but actively returned by everyone around him.

His presence in the local neighbourhood was unmistakable. Serving as the muazzin for the local masjid, he was chosen to deliver the Islamic Call to Prayer (adhan) due to the sheer power of his voice. Requiring no microphone, his voice echoed clearly across the community. This powerful voice mirrored his personality: independent, charismatic, humorous, and bursting with unstoppable energy. Friends and family members alike remember a man who could not be sat next to without radiating warmth and light, leading a truthful, humble life characterized by honorable character and devout worship.

Cherished Childhood Memories

For his grandchildren, he was much more than a community leader; he was a constant source of comfort and joy. Childhood memories of him are filled with sensory details that have stayed with his family through the years: listening to stories at bedtime, holding a strong, reassuring hand on the walk to the corner shop, and sitting together on a park bench beneath the shade of a large tree on hot summer days.

He was known for his mischievous sense of humor, sharing jokes and sweets, and leaving behind the lingering, distinct scent of attar. His laughter was often described as being like "basking in droplets of gold"—a sound as loud as thunder that brought comfort to every generation.

One of the most enduring lessons he imparted involved the significance of hard work and character, often taught through his large, strong hands. He would tell his grandchildren that the quality of a man could be read in the texture of his hands—that rough hands spoke of honest, hard labor, while soft hands indicated unfulfilled work. On wedding days, he would place his trust in the hands of the newly joined, symbolizing a deep-rooted belief in family protection and duty.

The Final Battles and the Test of Faith

As time progressed, the robust and energetic patriarch faced the difficult reality of a terminal, progressive illness. Documented through family photographs taken just before his diagnosis—such as one from a family picnic organized by his aunts—the contrast between his vibrant past and his final days was stark.

In the week leading up to his passing, he was hospitalized as his condition entered its final stages. Due to internal complications and his extreme frailty, medical interventions were limited. He was unable to take food or water orally, standard medications were halted, and routine saline solutions caused fluid buildup in his lungs. Compounding these struggles, he contracted MRSA, and his body gradually succumbed to the daily physical battles he faced.

Yet, even as his speech was reduced to a whisper, his body weakened, and he grew frail and tired, his faith remained unwavering. In photographs taken during his final days in the hospital, he can be seen making dua (supplication), holding onto his spiritual devotion when little else could be registered. When asked by family members to squeeze a hand to show his love, he managed to squeeze the hands of both his grandchild and his brother, offering a final smile amidst intense pain.

Passing and Legacy

He passed away on the morning of March 14, 2017, leaving behind a grieving family and community. True to the Islamic tradition, loved ones comforted themselves with the verse, Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi rajioon—"Indeed to Him we belong and to Him we will return."

At the time of his passing, his granddaughter was six months pregnant with her fourth child, with her other children all aged seven and under. Leaving her immediate family behind, she traveled to sit by his bedside for the last time, stroking his beard and holding his hands—the very hands that had protected, guided, and comforted generations, now feeling colder than her own.

The grief of losing such a central figure is a deeply personal journey, but his legacy of kinship, resilience, and love continues to live on through his family, his wife—his lifelong companion who supported him through every endeavor—and the countless lives he touched. Friends, family members, and community members continue to share his memory and offer prayers, ensuring that the light he brought into the world is never forgotten.
