Having lost his father when he was just two years old, Muhammed has spent much of his life learning what it means to shoulder heavy responsibilities. Today, at an age when many teenagers are focused entirely on their studies and peer groups, he tries his best to be a pillar of strength for his two younger sisters and his aging grandfather. This burden has grown exponentially heavier while facing the harsh and unrelenting reality of displacement in Gaza.
Despite the total destruction of his family home and being forced to live in a cramped, fragile tent that offers little protection from the elements, Muhammed has stubbornly refused to give up. In a context where daily survival consumes almost every waking hour, he continues to hold onto a steadfast belief that education can help him build a better future for himself and his loved ones.
Before the current crisis erupted, Muhammed and his family lived a remarkably simple and peaceful life. They were settled comfortably in his maternal grandparents’ home, surrounded by the quiet routines of daily life. Muhammed attended school regularly, applied himself diligently to his studies, and found joy in the ordinary rhythms of youth. In his free time, he enjoyed swimming and playing football with his friends and cousins, while his younger sisters grew up in an environment defined by familial warmth and emotional security.
That fundamental sense of safety vanished overnight when the shelling began. With very little warning, the family was forced to flee their home, escaping with almost nothing save for the clothes they were wearing on their backs.
The transition into displacement transformed daily life into an exhausting battle for basic necessities. The family was forced to spend hours fetching water and collecting firewood simply to cook basic meals. The thick, acrid smoke from open fires constantly irritated their eyes and affected their breathing, while their small, makeshift living space offered virtually no defense against the freezing temperatures, dampness, and torrential rains of winter.
Determined to continue his education
Even as the practical challenges of daily survival mounted, Muhammed remained fiercely determined to finish his high school education.
Demonstrating remarkable resourcefulness, he walked long distances each day through unfamiliar and hazardous areas simply to find a stable internet connection. This daily trek was essential so that he could access learning materials and take his high-school exams. After returning to the cold and damp environment of the tent, he would resume his studies, seizing every quiet moment he could find despite the lack of proper lighting, desk space, or warmth.
Ultimately, his extraordinary perseverance paid off. Muhammed graduated from high school with an impressive score of 84 percent—an academic achievement made all the more remarkable by the chaotic and destitute circumstances in which he was forced to prepare.
The successful completion of his secondary education and the subsequent opportunity to begin university studies provided a sudden, much-needed injection of hope. His first university semester was provided free of charge, allowing him to enroll and begin studying digital marketing, a field he hopes will lead to viable employment and long-term stability.
However, the path ahead remains fraught with financial and logistical hurdles. Continuing his studies will be exponentially more difficult than starting them. Muhammed worries intensely about how he will manage to pay future university tuition fees and how he can possibly acquire a laptop, which is an absolute necessity for completing his coursework, submitting assignments, and keeping pace with his digital marketing classes.
Islamic Relief’s orphan sponsorship provides vital support
During this exceptionally difficult chapter in their lives, the monthly sponsorship Muhammed receives through Islamic Relief has emerged as a crucial lifeline for his entire family.
The financial assistance helps them cover essential daily needs and significantly reduces the crushing weight of economic pressure that accompanies displacement. By alleviating some of these immediate survival concerns, the sponsorship affords Muhammed more breathing room to focus on his academic commitments and continue working toward his long-term goals.
Before the war began, Islamic Relief was actively supporting 8,700 sponsored orphans across the region. Today, as the humanitarian crisis has deepened and the number of children losing parents has soared, the programme supports nearly 25,200 orphaned children. This represents an extraordinary 190% increase in capacity. Thanks to the steady generosity of international sponsors, the organization has effectively tripled the number of children it supports in Gaza.
Nevertheless, the scale of the need remains overwhelming. There are currently more than 5,100 orphaned children languishing on the organization’s waiting list, desperately hoping for the safety net and lifeline that sponsorship provides.
For Muhammed, earning a university degree goes far beyond the acquisition of a formal qualification. To him, education represents a viable mechanism to build an independent future and eventually lift his family out of destitution. He hopes that completing his higher education will enable him to secure steady work and provide a reliable foundation for the people he loves so dearly.
A family still in urgent need
Despite the small comforts provided by humanitarian aid and sponsorship, life inside the tent remains intensely precarious and difficult.
Muhammed and his family are in urgent need of safer and more secure shelter, particularly as winter weather continues to bring freezing temperatures, wind, and rain. A sturdier, larger tent equipped with protective weather-proofing materials would go a long way toward shielding them from the harsh elements.
Beyond structural shelter, the family lacks basic household commodities. They are in dire need of mattresses, warm blankets, proper storage containers for their clothes and personal belongings, cooking equipment, and seasonally appropriate winter clothing and shoes for Muhammed and his sisters.
For Muhammed specifically, securing a laptop is non-negotiable if he is to remain enrolled in his university courses and complete his degree. Assistance with upcoming tuition payments would likewise ensure that his academic journey is not abruptly cut short by financial destitution. Providing these fundamental requirements would not only enhance the family’s physical safety but also grant them a measure of stability while allowing Muhammed to keep chasing his educational ambitions.
Holding on to hope
Muhammed has lost his physical home, his childhood neighborhood, and the predictable rhythm of the life he once knew. Yet, through all the displacement and hardship, he has refused to surrender his belief in the transformative power of education.
His unwavering determination to study while living under canvas tents amid an active crisis is a testament to his resilience and his profound commitment to forging a different destiny for his family. With continued outside support, young people like Muhammed can manage to retain their education, protect their ambitions, and hold onto a fragile hope for what the future might hold.
Through ongoing donor support, Islamic Relief aims to remain a steady lifeline for vulnerable, orphaned children across Palestine, offering a path forward to those who need it most.
