GAZA — Having lost his father at the tender age of just two years old, Muhammed has spent much of his youth understanding the weight of responsibility. Today, against the backdrop of relentless conflict and the harsh realities of mass displacement in Gaza, that responsibility has multiplied exponentially. As the eldest male figure in his immediate circle, he tries his absolute best to act as a steadfast pillar of strength for his two younger sisters and his aging grandfather, navigating a daily existence defined by hardship, uncertainty, and survival.
Yet, even as the walls of his childhood home were reduced to rubble and his family was forced into the precarious shelter of a canvas tent, Muhammed has steadfastly refused to surrender his ambitions. Where others might see only insurmountable obstacles, he maintains a firm, unshakeable belief that education remains his single most powerful tool—a beacon of light capable of helping him carve out a dignified, secure future not just for himself, but for the family members who depend on him.
Before the current crisis upended their lives, Muhammed and his relatives lived a rhythmically simple, peaceful existence centered around his maternal grandparents’ home. Life, though modest, held a predictable and comforting routine. Muhammed attended school regularly, pouring dedication and long hours into his studies, eager to learn and expand his horizons. Away from the classroom, his days were filled with the typical joys of childhood and adolescence. He spent his free time swimming and playing football in the streets and open spaces with his friends and cousins, sharing laughter and camaraderie. His younger sisters grew up sheltered from the worst of the world, nurtured by a deeply loving, supportive family network that provided both emotional safety and physical security.
That entire framework of safety vanished overnight when the shelling and military operations began closing in around them. Faced with imminent danger and destruction, the family had no choice but to pack up and flee on a moment’s notice. They left behind their possessions, their memories, and the only home they had ever known, escaping with little more than the clothes they were wearing on their backs.
The Grinding Realities of Tent Life
The transition from a permanent home to a makeshift tent introduced an exhausting daily struggle for survival. Routine tasks that were once taken for granted became monumental undertakings. Every single day, the family had to organize the arduous chore of fetching water from distant points and collecting firewood just to cook basic meals. The thick, acrid smoke from open fires constantly filled their cramped living space, irritating their throats and affecting their breathing. Their small, improvised shelter offered virtually no defense against the elements, leaving them entirely vulnerable to the biting cold weather, dampness, and pouring rain of the winter months.
Determined to Continue His Education
Despite the overwhelming daily physical demands and the psychological toll of displacement, Muhammed remained fiercely resolute in his determination to complete his schooling and pass his high-school examinations.
When the local educational infrastructure collapsed, he did not allow his books to gather dust. Instead, he regularly walked long, exhausting distances each day simply to locate areas with functional internet access, striving to stay connected to his coursework and meet the requirements for his exams. Upon returning to the cold, damp confines of the family tent at the end of the day, he refused to let the adverse conditions deter him. Utilizing every quiet moment he could salvage amid the commotion of camp life, he hunched over his books, studying by whatever light was available.
Ultimately, his extraordinary resilience and tireless work ethic bore fruit. Muhammed successfully graduated from high school, earning an impressive score of 84 percent. It was an academic achievement made all the more remarkable—and poignant—by the chaotic and deeply impoverished circumstances under which he was forced to learn.
Earning his diploma opened a door to higher education, presenting him with a glimmer of hope for a different kind of life. He secured the opportunity to begin university, with his critical first semester covered free of charge, allowing him to officially enroll and begin studying digital marketing.
However, looking ahead, the path remains fraught with financial anxiety. Muhammed worries deeply about how he will manage to pay for his upcoming university tuition fees. Compounding the challenge is his urgent need for a laptop, an indispensable tool for a digital marketing student required to complete coursework, research, and digital assignments.
Islamic Relief’s Orphan Sponsorship Provides Vital Support
Throughout this prolonged period of extreme vulnerability, the assistance provided by humanitarian organizations has served as a critical lifeline. The monthly sponsorship Muhammed receives through Islamic Relief has emerged as an essential source of stability for his displaced family.
This vital financial assistance directly helps them cover essential day-to-day needs, cutting down some of the crushing financial pressure that weighs on the household. By easing the immediate burdens of survival, the support affords Muhammed a bit more breathing room to concentrate on his lectures, assignments, and long-term academic goals.
The scope of this need has expanded dramatically across Gaza in recent years. Before the war escalated, Islamic Relief was actively supporting 8,700 sponsored orphans. Today, responding to the staggering surge in need caused by ongoing violence, the programme has scaled up dramatically to support nearly 25,200 orphaned children—representing an approximately 190 percent increase. Thanks to the steady generosity of international donors and sponsors, the organization has effectively tripled the number of vulnerable children it supports on the ground in Gaza.
Even with this expanded capacity, the scale of the crisis outpaces current resources. At present, more than 5,100 orphaned children remain on the organization’s waiting list, yearning for the vital lifeline that a sponsorship can provide.
For Muhammed, pursuing a university degree is not merely about accumulating academic credits or earning a professional qualification. It represents a practical, purposeful pathway toward personal independence and a long-term means of providing stability for the people he holds most dear. He remains deeply hopeful that completing his higher education will open doors to meaningful employment, allowing him to build a secure environment for his aging grandfather and his younger sisters.
A Family Still in Urgent Need
Despite the glimmers of hope offered by his academic progress, daily life inside the family’s tent remains exceptionally difficult and precarious.
Muhammed and his relatives are in urgent need of safer, more secure shelter infrastructure, particularly as winter approaches with its punishingly cold temperatures and heavy rainfall. Upgrading to a larger, sturdier tent equipped with professional protective coverings and waterproof sheeting would go a long way toward shielding them from the elements.
Furthermore, the family lacks basic household items that most take for granted. They are in dire need of durable mattresses, thick and warm blankets, proper storage solutions for their meager clothing and personal belongings, functional cooking equipment, and seasonal winter clothing and shoes suitable for Muhammed and his sisters.
For Muhammed specifically, securing a laptop is paramount if he is to remain enrolled in his university classes and complete his digital marketing assignments. Combined with assistance for his upcoming tuition fees, these foundational resources would give the family a much-needed margin of safety while allowing Muhammed to keep chasing his academic dreams.
Holding on to Hope
Muhammed has lost his physical home, his neighborhood, and the predictable, peaceful life he once knew. Yet, through all the disruptions, he has steadfastly held onto his belief in the transformative power of education.
His unwavering drive to study amidst the dust, cold, and uncertainty of a displacement camp illustrates a profound dedication to forging a different future. With continued humanitarian backing, young Palestinians like Muhammed can maintain their education, protect their ambitions, and preserve their hope for a peaceful tomorrow.
Islamic Relief continues to appeal for public backing to sustain its operations, serving as a critical pillar of support for orphaned children and vulnerable families throughout Palestine.
