Overcoming Social Media Comparison: Finding Contentment Through Prophetic Wisdom

By: Nana Muazin • Oct 5, 2026 • 4 min read

In the contemporary digital age, individuals find themselves constantly immersed in a virtual highlight reel of life. Platforms are continuously flooded with snapshots of success, milestone achievements, lavish vacations, new career appointments, growing families, and material acquisitions. While these shared moments often serve as a means to stay connected with loved ones across distances, they frequently trigger an unintended psychological toll. For many users, viewing the curated perfection of others fosters feelings of inadequacy, dissatisfaction, and quiet anxiety regarding the state of their own lives.

Addressing this modern phenomenon, speaker Lobna Mulla explored the psychological and spiritual implications of digital consumption during her presentation at the MASCON2017 convention, titled "Not Everything that Shines is Gold." Rather than advocating for a complete disconnection from digital networks—recognizing that social media remains a valuable tool for maintaining personal relationships—the discussion focused heavily on navigating the emotional pitfalls of online comparison and reclaiming personal peace of mind.

The core challenge facing modern digital consumers lies in the psychological tendency to measure one’s behind-the-scenes reality against the public highlights of acquaintances and strangers alike. Hours spent scrolling through newsfeeds often culminate in a lingering sense of falling short—whether in terms of physical appearance, professional achievement, financial stability, or overall fortune. This persistent self-evaluation frequently overlooks the daily blessings and comforts that individuals already possess, creating an internal imbalance that undermines genuine gratitude.

Finding Contentment in Social Media Life

To counter these feelings of discontent, the discourse points toward enduring spiritual principles found within Islamic tradition. Both the Quran and the traditions of Prophet Muhammad offer a timeless and straightforward methodology for achieving true contentment and emotional stability. Central to this approach is a deliberate shift in perspective regarding societal status and material wealth.

According to prophetic guidance, individuals are advised to look toward those who possess fewer worldly provisions rather than focusing upward toward those who have been granted more. This foundational teaching encourages a recalibration of personal perspective, helping individuals recognize the hidden abundance within their own circumstances. Implementing this principle often requires stepping away from digital screens and engaging directly with the physical world, particularly by interacting with members of the community who are enduring genuine hardships.

Visiting individuals who are facing prolonged illness, financial distress, or personal tribulation offers a grounded antidote to the artificial standards promoted by digital media. Such experiences cultivate profound appreciation for fundamental blessings that are frequently taken for granted, such as health, security, and basic daily sustenance. Through direct exposure to the realities of others, the human heart naturally transitions from a state of quiet complaint to one of active appreciation.

Trusting in Allah’s Provisions

At the heart of this perspective is a deeper spiritual reliance on the concept of divine provision. Within Islamic theology, Allah Almighty is recognized as Ar-Razzaq, the All-Provider, who distributes sustenance and blessings according to divine wisdom. By intentionally stepping outside the digital echo chamber and connecting with the less fortunate, individuals position themselves to better recognize, value, and give thanks for every provision they have been granted.

This conscious redirection of attention stands in stark contrast to the passive consumption of social media content. While digital platforms frequently amplify materialism and perpetual striving for more, direct human connection fosters empathy, humility, and contentment. Recognizing the abundance of daily blessings honors the provisions gifted by the Creator, shifting focus away from artificial societal expectations.

Lobna Mulla’s insights, captured during her talk at the MASCON2017 convention organized by the MASICNA Convention network, continue to resonate with audiences seeking balance in a hyper-connected world. By acknowledging that not everything that shines is gold, individuals are encouraged to look past digital facades and anchor their satisfaction in genuine gratitude, community engagement, and spiritual awareness.
