Türkiye Strongly Condemns Drone Attack on Medina Power Station Supplying Prophet’s Mosque

Türkiye has strongly condemned a recent drone attack targeting a vital power distribution station in the Saudi city of Medina, a facility that supplies critical electricity to the Prophet’s Mosque. The strong diplomatic rebuke from Ankara serves to reiterate its steadfast support for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia amid a backdrop of renewed regional tensions and escalating security concerns across the Arabian Peninsula.

The attack, which took place on September 29, immediately drew sharp condemnation from high-ranking Turkish officials, political parties, and government ministries. Ömer Çelik, spokesperson for Türkiye’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party), voiced his outrage on Friday, emphasizing that targeting crucial infrastructure that serves the Prophet’s Mosque—Islam’s second-holiest site—is entirely unacceptable and crosses a major red line for the broader Muslim world.

In a strongly worded statement shared on social media, Çelik stressed that assaults directed against shared sacred values constitute illegitimate acts directed against all Muslims everywhere. He added that Türkiye stands resolutely behind Saudi Arabia, offering unwavering support for the Kingdom’s national security, territorial integrity, and domestic stability.

According to regional reports and military assessments, the targeted facility plays a crucial role in the local electrical grid by supplying power to the Prophet’s Mosque. While the drone strike successfully impacted the station and put a single transformer out of service, the broader electricity network managed to withstand the shock, preventing a catastrophic blackout or direct physical damage to the holy sanctuary itself.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry echoed these sentiments in an official statement, issuing a forceful condemnation of the attack. The ministry asserted that ongoing strikes targeting civilian infrastructure and directly threatening the sovereignty and security of Saudi Arabia must cease immediately and without any conditions. The diplomatic communique reiterated Ankara’s firm solidarity with the Kingdom while urgently calling on all regional actors and conflicting parties to exercise maximum restraint and avoid any provocative steps that could further escalate tensions and destabilize the wider region.

"We reaffirm our strong support for Saudi Arabia and emphasize the need to avoid any steps that would further escalate tensions in the region," the ministry’s official statement emphasized, underscoring Ankara’s commitment to diplomatic stability and regional security cooperation.

In parallel with the Foreign Ministry’s remarks, Presidential Communications Director Burhanettin Duran also spoke out on Friday, explicitly condemning the aerial strike. Duran underscored that Türkiye remains fully committed to standing by Saudi Arabia during challenging security incidents and will continue to support regional efforts aimed at protecting critical civilian infrastructure from hostile actions.

The wider context of the attack points toward ongoing cross-border conflicts involving Houthi forces. Following a thorough investigation and rigorous examination of recovered drone wreckage at the site, the Saudi-led coalition formally attributed responsibility for the September 29 operation to the Houthi movement.

Major Gen. Turki Al Maliki, spokesperson for the Saudi-led coalition, reiterated the strategic importance of the targeted facility, noting its specific function in providing power to the Prophet’s Mosque, a site of immense spiritual reverence for millions of Muslims globally. The attack on Medina represents a continuation of concerning aerial threats directed toward sacred locations within the Kingdom. Just two weeks prior, Saudi authorities announced that they had successfully intercepted and destroyed another alleged Houthi drone south of Mecca before it could breach restricted airspace over Islam’s holiest city. At the time, the coalition characterized that previous incident as the second explicit attempt by Houthi forces to target Mecca since 2017, heightening alarms over the safety of the Kingdom’s religious landmarks.

The international community and regional bodies reacted swiftly to the Medina strike. Earlier on Thursday, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), along with a broad coalition of Arab nations including the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Kuwait, and Bahrain, issued separate statements strongly condemning the attack on Medina.

The OIC characterized the deliberate targeting of vital infrastructure and civilian facilities as a dangerous escalation. Furthermore, the organization labeled the act as a blatant violation of the sanctity of Islamic holy sites, as well as a direct breach of established international laws, humanitarian norms, and regional security protocols. As diplomatic and security officials continue to monitor the situation, the collective condemnation from Ankara, regional governments, and international bodies highlights a unified front against threats directed at civilian infrastructure and sacred religious sites.
