Unlocking Billions: How Islamic Finance is Transforming "Under the Mattress" Gold Assets into Mainstream Economic Power

By: Laily UPN • Sep 25, 2026 • 6 min read

For generations, gold has occupied a central place in Islamic cultures, serving not merely as a luxury or commodity, but as a deeply rooted tradition of wealth preservation, familial heritage, and security. Across many societies, precious metals are traditionally passed down through families, marking milestones, weddings, and inheritances. However, for all its cultural and intrinsic value, this vast accumulation of wealth has historically remained dormant. Kept securely in private domestic vaults, home safes, and traditional hiding spots—often referred to colloquially as "under the mattress" assets—this gold has remained entirely inactive within the wider financial architecture, contributing little to broader economic activity, national reserves, or systemic liquidity.

Today, this paradigm is beginning to shift dramatically. The evolution of Islamic finance gold banking offers immense potential to convert billions of dollars of these idle physical assets into dynamic participants in mainstream economies. By creating Sharia-compliant pathways for savers to bring their gold out of private storage and into the formal financial system, institutions are helping to stimulate economic activity, boost national reserves, and expand financial inclusion. As the global financial landscape searches for stable, tangible asset classes that comply with ethical principles, the integration of gold stands out as a transformative development for modern Islamic economics.

Turkey is the undisputed leader in the use of gold within Islamic finance markets, pioneering innovative methodologies that other nations and financial institutions are watching closely. Through sophisticated Turkish gold-backed sukuk issuances and consumer-facing retail gold banking products, the country has successfully integrated vast quantities of idle private gold into the formal economy. This strategic integration has made a substantial and measurable contribution to the official gold reserves of the Central Bank of Turkey, strengthening the nation’s macroeconomic resilience and currency backing.

The successful incorporation of gold into a feasible mainstream asset class demonstrates unbound potential for the broader Islamic finance sector. For decades, the industry sought reliable, permissible asset classes that could support complex financial planning, liquidity management, and trade without compromising religious principles. Gold, with its universal recognition and intrinsic stability, provides an ideal foundation. By bridging the gap between traditional cultural practices and modern banking technology, institutions in pioneering markets have proven that generational wealth can be successfully mobilized for public and private economic benefit.

Among the institutional pioneers leading this movement is Kuveyt Türk, a prominent Turkish Islamic bank that began offering specialized gold banking services as early as 2007. Over the subsequent years, the institution achieved remarkable success, collecting over 26 tons of gold—valued at approximately $1.2 billion as of July 2019—and seamlessly integrating those assets into the Turkish financial system. Within the broader national context, the total amount of gold held within the country’s entire financial system is estimated to be around a staggering US $100 billion, illustrating just how vast the untapped potential remains for forward-thinking institutions.

Kuveyt Türk has redefined how retail customers interact with their precious metal holdings, offering a sophisticated suite of products that strip away the friction traditionally associated with physical gold ownership. Customers utilizing the bank’s gold accounts can execute regular gold savings plans linked directly to their credit or debit cards, making the accumulation of wealth as straightforward as standard currency banking. Furthermore, account holders are given the flexibility to trade both physical and virtual gold seamlessly, bridging the digital economy with tangible assets.

To enhance liquidity and convenience, the bank introduced innovative features such as physical gold coins that can be withdrawn directly from specialized automated teller machines, as well as digital purchasing capabilities. In a particularly novel development, the introduction of a gold cheque book allows account holders to execute direct transfers of gold assets even to non-bank customers, effectively creating a parallel medium of exchange backed entirely by bullion.

Recognizing that bringing generational wealth into the banking sector requires overcoming deep-seated cultural habits and building absolute trust, Kuveyt Türk has invested heavily in public education. The bank routinely dispatches educational outreach teams across the country to engage with communities, aiming to increase general financial literacy and raise awareness regarding the safety, utility, and economic benefits of professional gold banking.

In its marketing and community engagement strategies, the bank has notably focused on empowering women, who traditionally hold significant influence over family gold reserves and jewelry within many households. Through a targeted series of commercial campaigns titled "Golden Dreams" and the regular organization of community-focused "gold days," the bank actively promotes the concept of integrating private wealth into the national economy, framing modern gold banking not as a loss of control over one’s heritage, but as a secure and rewarding enhancement of personal financial health.

The momentum generated by early pioneers has also encouraged newer market entrants to adopt and expand upon these models. Vakif Katilim, established in 2016 as a newer Turkish participation bank, quickly carved out a significant presence in the sector. Operating under the ambitious and confident slogan of "Turkey’s National Gold Bank," the institution demonstrated the robust and ongoing demand for these services by processing approximately USD 425 million worth of gold transactions in the year 2018 alone, proving that the market for formalized Islamic gold banking is both expanding and maturing rapidly.

The remarkable growth of retail and institutional gold banking in markets like Turkey did not occur in a vacuum; it has been significantly bolstered by crucial regulatory and structural milestones at the international level. A major turning point arrived in 2016, when the World Gold Council and the Accounting and Auditing Organisation for Islamic Financial Institutions (AAOIFI) jointly approved a comprehensive Sharia standard specifically governing gold-based financial products.

The primary objective of this landmark standard was to systematically increase the utilization of bullion within the global Islamic finance architecture, thereby laying the groundwork for the creation of a diverse array of innovative new financial instruments. Prior to the introduction of the standard, legal and religious ambiguities surrounding the spot exchange and deferred delivery of precious metals often restricted the development of sophisticated gold-backed products.

The AAOIFI standard successfully addressed these complexities by clarifying the precise regulatory parameters surrounding the use of gold as collateral, as well as governing the strict mechanics of exchanging gold in both spot and deferred transactions. By establishing clear, internationally recognized rules that satisfy both modern financial regulatory frameworks and strict religious jurisprudence, the standard has provided the legal certainty required for banks, investment funds, and institutional players to design, launch, and scale sophisticated gold products with confidence.

As these standards become more widely adopted and institutional frameworks continue to strengthen, the horizon for Islamic finance gold banking looks increasingly promising. By transforming passive heirlooms and dormant domestic reserves into active, productive capital, the financial sector is unlocking unprecedented economic value. The ongoing success of institutional initiatives, coupled with robust educational outreach and clear international standards, ensures that the ancient tradition of holding gold will continue to play a vital, modern role in driving economic growth and stability for decades to come.
