Virat Kohli Reaches 15,000 ODI Runs as India Cruises to Eight-Wicket Win Over West Indies

Virat Kohli has cemented his status as one of the greatest cricketers in the history of the sport, becoming only the second batter after his legendary compatriot Sachin Tendulkar to reach the monumental milestone of 15,000 runs in men’s one-day international (ODI) cricket.

Kohli achieved this historic feat in style on Sunday, anchoring India’s innings with a magnificent, unbeaten century as the hosts cruised to a comfortable eight-wicket victory over the West Indies in the opening match of the three-match series. Playing with supreme confidence and characteristic elegance, Kohli struck 139 not out from just 88 balls. Alongside a brilliant century from opening batter Shubman Gill, who made 110, Kohli helped India effortlessly chase down a challenging target of 296 with 50 balls to spare, giving the home side a 1-0 lead in the series.

The momentous milestone arrives during a poignant chapter of Kohli’s illustrious career. Just days prior to the match, the batting maestro announced that the upcoming 50-over World Cup, scheduled for next year, will be his final tournament representing the national team. Having already retired from both T20 internationals and Test cricket, Kohli now exclusively represents India in the 50-over format, making every remaining appearance on the international stage a historic occasion for cricket fans worldwide.

The emphatic victory was built on a foundation of aggressive batting and dominant partnerships after India was tasked with chasing a competitive total. Rohit Sharma and Gill launched the Indian response with an assertive 74-run opening partnership, setting a brisk tempo before Sharma was dismissed in the 12th over. Unfazed by the early breakthrough, Gill, currently ranked as the world’s top-ranked ODI batter, took firm control of the crease. Maintaining an aggressive and proactive approach against both pace and spin, Gill reached his 10th ODI century in spectacular fashion by sweeping the ball to the boundary.

With the platform firmly established, Kohli walked in at number three to script yet another chapter in his storied career. He notched his 86th international century, combining power, precision, and brilliant running between the wickets. Gill, meanwhile, continued to punish the West Indian bowling attack, compiling 110 runs from 108 deliveries. Together, the pair put on a phenomenal, game-defining partnership of 151 runs off just 132 balls, effectively sealing the contest long before the final runs were scored.

Although Roston Chase eventually broke the partnership by removing Gill, there was no respite for the visiting bowlers. Ruturaj Gaikwad stepped in and contributed a steady 13 runs from 19 balls, calmly rotating the strike and partnering with Kohli to steer India toward the target without any further alarms. Fittingly, it was Kohli who brought the match to a decisive close, sealing the victory with successive boundaries that sent the crowd into raptures and marked his historic entry into the 15,000-run club alongside Tendulkar.

The West Indies innings, which ultimately ended at a competitive 295, had earlier put the Indian bowling attack under considerable pressure. Put in to bat after losing the toss, visiting openers Justin Greaves and John Campbell provided their side with an exceptional start. The duo added 135 runs from 117 balls for the first wicket, frustrating the Indian bowlers through disciplined shot-selection and solid technique.

For much of the first 20 overs, India struggled desperately to find a breakthrough as Greaves and Campbell dominated the proceedings and laid a robust platform for a formidable total. Greaves, who received an early reprieve when he was dropped by Sharma when on 16, capitalized fully on the opportunity. He made India pay dearly for the mistake, crafting a magnificent maiden ODI century and finishing as the top-scorer for the visitors.

The crucial turning point in the West Indies innings arrived in the 20th over when wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav made the vital breakthrough. Yadav deceived Campbell in the air as the opener attempted a sweep, resulting in a catch at short fine leg. Buoyed by the breakthrough, Yadav and fellow bowler Prasidh Krishna began to apply the brakes on the West Indies scoring rate. The visitors suffered a dramatic middle-order collapse, losing four wickets for just 22 runs in a tight passage of play between the 31st and 36th overs.

Yadav finished the match with impressive figures of 4-40, marking a stellar return to the ODI setup. However, the West Indies managed a spirited recovery thanks to a counterattacking knock from Amir Jangoo, who smashed 58 runs off just 43 balls. Benefiting from valuable support from Chase, Jangoo helped resurrect the innings after the visitors had slipped to 198-5, pushing the total to a competitive 295. In the end, however, the target proved insufficient against a clinical Indian batting display spearheaded by Kohli and Gill.
