A Lasting Legacy of Love and Faith: Remembering a Beloved Grandfather and Community Muazzin

The passing of a family patriarch often leaves an unfillable void, but few figures manage to imprint themselves upon a community and its future generations quite like a dedicated grandfather whose life was defined by service, faith, and unconditional love. This is the deeply personal and poignant reflection of a devoted granddaughter mourning the loss of her grandfather, a man who served as the muazzin of his local masjid, a pillar of his family, and a guiding light whose memory continues to resonate deeply within the hearts of those he left behind.

Captured in a photograph taken during a family picnic arranged by his daughters just before he was diagnosed with a life-limiting, terminal, and progressive illness, the grandfather’s radiant presence remains vivid in the memories of his family. He was the man who raised his son, provided a home and a family, and opened both his doors and his heart to envelop his loved ones in compassion. Throughout his granddaughter’s life, that love was an unwavering constant, returning warmth whenever she thought of him.

Memories of her childhood with him overflow with tenderness—listening to stories before bedtime, holding his strong hand on the walk to the corner shop, and sitting in his warm embrace on a park bench during a hot summer day beneath the shade of a great big tree in their old neighborhood. He shared sweets and jokes, possessing a mischievous sense of humor, accompanied by the lingering scent of his attar and the sound of his booming laughter, which felt like basking in droplets of gold.

Beyond his role within the family, he held a respected position in the wider community as the muazzin of the local masjid. Endowed with a voice so powerful that he was chosen to deliver the Call to Prayer without the need of a microphone, his resonant voice could be heard far and wide. That voice and his booming laughter defined his personality, his independence, his charisma, his humor, and his buzzing, unstoppable energy. In those earlier days, he was a pillar of strength, a man his family never once saw cry.

The final chapter of his life, however, presented a stark and heartbreaking contrast. As his terminal illness progressed, his powerful voice was quietened to a whisper, his speech became unclear, and he struggled to make himself heard. No longer independent, he tired easily, becoming weak and frail. He cried without inhibition as his body deteriorated day by day, losing a little more of himself with each passing moment.

Described as a diamond among men and the major love of his granddaughter’s life, he radiated warmth and light to anyone who sat beside him. He had led a truthful and humble life, remaining devout in his worship and honorable in character, touching the lives of countless individuals who could not easily forget him even after a single meeting.

Following a week of hospitalization in his final stages, the toll of his illness became insurmountable. Too weak and fragile for treatment or medical intervention, he was nil by mouth, and his usual medications were halted due to internal complications. Intravenous saline caused fluid buildup in his lungs, and struggling against infections, he contracted MRSA. His body slowly succumbed to the daily battles he faced, leaving his family uncertain of what each day would bring.

Yet, even in his final days when he could barely speak or keep his eyes open, his devotion to his faith remained unbroken. He continued to remember to pray, captured in moments making dua on his hospital bed before he passed away on the morning of March 14, 2017, prompting the traditional Islamic remembrance: Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi rajioon—Indeed to Him we belong and to Him we will return. The eyes weep and the heart mourns, but the tongue utters only that which pleases Allah.

At the time of his passing, his granddaughter was six months pregnant with her fourth child, with her other children all aged seven and under. Leaving them behind to be with him for the last time, she sat by his side as time seemed to freeze. She memorized every line and crevice of his sleeping face, stroked his beard just as she had done in childhood, and held his hands for the final time.

Those hands had long been a symbol of strength and protection. In childhood, she would spend hours playing with his big, warm hands, pulling his fingers while he indulged her patience. He often taught her that the quality of a man lies in the texture of his hands—rough from hard work, signaling a life of labor. On her wedding day, he had held her husband’s hand throughout the day, declaring before giving her away that her husband’s hands were strong and capable of caring for her.

Even on his hospital bed, amidst severe pain, when asked by his daughter to squeeze the hand of his most beloved—her brother or her—he managed to squeeze both and offer a smile. Those same hands, which had once picked her up, comforted her, and held her children, were now colder than her own for the first time in her life.

The days following his passing—the ghusal, the burial, and the visits to his grave—melted into a blur of tears. Reflecting on childhood beliefs, she recalled how she once thought the moon followed her to ensure light was always on her path, only to realize later that her grandfather’s face had been her moon, always smiling, guiding, and shining light through his constant duas and blessings.

The months and years following his return to Allah highlighted the profound loneliness of grief. While a hundred people may grieve the same person, the burden of sorrow is individual, leaving one to ultimately rely on Allah to hear helpless cries. Remembering her grandmother, his lifelong companion and the person he loved most, who supported him through everything, the family’s shared grief remains a testament to the depth of his impact.

In a heartfelt prayer penned in his memory, his granddaughter recalled his radiant smile, his thunderous laughter, and the warmth of his embrace that touched every generation. She remembered how his lips never ceased to invoke Allah’s name, and she prayed that the pain he endured in his final days would serve as purification, wiping away human errors and elevating his good deeds. She asked Allah to fill his grave with light, warmth, and comfort, widen his place of rest, and grant him eternal peace in the gardens of Paradise surrounded by relentless mercy.

Today, the remembrance of his lessons on the value of family, kinship, and unconditional love continues to endure. Preserving his legacy through prayer, his family holds fast to the faith and devotion he modeled throughout his life, concluding with traditional supplications for the living and the dead, asking for forgiveness, mercy, and eternal peace for a man who touched so many lives.
