A TRIBUTE TO A BELOVED PATRIARCH: REMEMBERING A LIFE OF FAITH, COMPASSION, AND SERVICE

The passing of a family patriarch often leaves a profound void that extends far beyond the immediate household, touching an entire community. This was acutely felt with the passing of a deeply cherished grandfather, a man whose life was defined by unwavering devotion, a booming voice that resonated across his neighborhood, and a profound capacity for love that shaped generations.

Captured in a photograph taken during a family picnic organized by his daughters just before he received a diagnosis of a life-limiting, progressive terminal illness, he radiated the warmth that characterized his entire existence. He was the pillar who raised his son, providing a home, a family, and an environment enveloped in compassion and unconditional love. Throughout his life, that love was continually reciprocated by those he sheltered and nurtured.

Reflecting on his life brings forth a cascade of rich childhood memories: listening to his bedtime stories, holding his strong hand on the walk to the corner shop, and sitting in his warm embrace on a hot summer day beneath the shade of a massive tree in their old neighborhood. He shared sweets and lighthearted jokes, possessing a mischievous sense of humor that endeared him to everyone. Memories of him are inextricably linked with the lingering scent of his attar and the sound of his booming laughter, which felt like basking in droplets of gold.

Beyond his role as a family anchor, he held a prominent position in the local community as the muazzin of the local masjid. Gifted with a powerful voice, he was chosen to deliver the Call to Prayer without the aid of a microphone, carrying a resonance that could be heard clearly across the area. His voice and laughter were the defining hallmarks of his independent spirit, charisma, humor, and unstoppable energy. During those years, his family never saw him shed a single tear.

The final chapter of his life, however, presented a stark and heartbreaking contrast. As his terminal illness progressed, his powerful voice was reduced to a whisper, his speech became unclear, and he struggled to make himself heard. Losing his independence, he tired easily, growing increasingly weak and frail. In a departure from the resilient figure of his earlier years, he began to cry without inhibition. Day by day, his condition deteriorated, and incremental pieces of his vibrant personality slipped away.

Described by his loved ones as a diamond among men and the defining love of their lives, his presence was luminous. No one could sit beside him without feeling the warmth and light radiating from his person. He had led a truthful, humble life characterized by devout worship and honorable character, touching countless lives in a manner that ensured he would never be forgotten by anyone who met even once.

During his final week, following a deterioration in his health, he was hospitalized. Physicians confirmed he had entered the final stages of his illness and advised the family to prepare for the worst. Too weak and frail for medical intervention or treatment, he was placed nil by mouth, and his regular medications were halted due to internal complications. Intravenous saline could not be administered because it led to fluid accumulation in his lungs. Racked by infections he lacked the strength to fight, exhausted, and in immense pain, his body eventually contracted MRSA and slowly succumbed to the daily battles he faced. Each day brought profound uncertainty regarding what the future held.

Despite being so unwell that he could barely speak or keep his eyes open, his devotion to his faith remained paramount. Even in his final days, he continued to make dua, embodying the spiritual steadfastness that had guided his entire life.

He passed away on the morning of March 14, 2017, prompting the traditional reflection: Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi rajioon—truly to Him we belong and to Him we shall return. As the Quranic reminder states, the eyes weep and the heart mourns, but the tongue utters only what pleases Allah.

At the time of his passing, his granddaughter was six months pregnant with her fourth child, with her other children all aged seven and under. Leaving them behind, she traveled to be by his side for the final time. Sitting with him, time seemed to freeze. She memorized every line and crevice of his sleeping face, which remained filled with peace and light. Stroking his beard just as she had in childhood, she held his hands—those large, strong hands that had defined so much of her upbringing.

He often spoke of the value of hard work, telling her that the quality of a man lies in the texture of his hands—rough from labor or soft with work left undone—and joking that he would never let her marry a man with soft hands. Yet, he also lived by the principle that true strength is never used to harm others. On her wedding day, he had held her husband’s hand throughout the festivities, declaring before giving her away that her husband’s hands were strong and capable of looking after her.

Even in the hospital, trapped in pain, when asked by an aunt to squeeze the hand of his most beloved relatives, he managed to summon the strength to squeeze both hands and offer a smile. Those same hands were raised in prayer when he could register little else.

The day he died marked the first time his hands felt colder than her own. They were the hands that had protected, comforted, and raised her, and that had held all but one of her children. The subsequent days of his ghusal, burial, and grave visitation blurred into a continuous stream of tears.

Reflecting on childhood memories of believing the moon followed her everywhere to light her path, she realized that her grandfather had been her moon—always smiling, guiding, and illuminating the way through his constant prayers and blessings.

The months and years following his return to Allah highlighted the profound loneliness of grief. Even when shared among many, grief is an intensely personal experience, ultimately navigated by turning to Allah alone. Her heart remained with her grandmother, his lifelong companion and the person he loved most, who supported him through every endeavor.

Remembering his legacy of family, kinship, and unconditional love, his family and community continue to hold him in their prayers, asking for his sins to be wiped away, his pain to serve as purification, and his final resting place to be filled with light, warmth, and eternal peace in the gardens of Paradise.
