Finding Contentment in the Age of Social Media: Lessons from Lobna Mulla at MASCON

We live in an era of constant connectivity, where digital windows grant us immediate access to the highlights of other people’s lives. Every time we open our preferred applications or scroll through our feeds, we are met with a continuous stream of curated successes. Friends and acquaintances share photographs of their new careers, newborn children, exotic vacations, and upgraded automobiles, often accompanied by expressions of gratitude and praise. While celebrating the blessings of others is a natural part of human community, this perpetual exposure to idealized lifestyles can often trigger unintended psychological and spiritual consequences, frequently leaving individuals feeling less satisfied with their own personal circumstances.

Despite the psychological pitfalls associated with modern digital consumption, the solution is not necessarily to abandon social networks entirely. Platforms designed for digital interaction remain valuable instruments for maintaining relationships with family members, friends, and broader community networks across vast geographical distances. Instead of retreating from the digital sphere completely, the central challenge facing contemporary society involves learning how to navigate these platforms without falling into the trap of constant social comparison. The crucial question remains: how can individuals cultivate a genuine sense of blessing and contentment with what they currently possess while participating in a modern digital culture that constantly highlights abundance, luxury, and perfection?

Islamic traditions, drawing directly from the guidance found within the Quran and the recorded traditions of Prophet Muhammad, offer a timeless and remarkably effective framework for achieving lasting inner peace and psychological contentment. Rather than encouraging individuals to measure their worth or happiness against those who possess greater material wealth, higher social standing, or more visible forms of success, prophetic wisdom redirects human perspective entirely. In a well-documented narration recorded in the collection of Imam Muslim, Prophet Muhammad explicitly advised believers to look toward those individuals who have been granted less in worldly matters, rather than constantly gazing upward at those who have been given more.

This prophetic counsel serves as a powerful psychological and spiritual anchor, encouraging individuals to reevaluate their standard of comparison. When people consciously shift their focus away from the material opulence displayed on digital media and instead direct their attention toward the realities of those experiencing genuine trials, their entire worldview undergoes a profound transformation. Many members of the global community and local neighborhoods continuously navigate significant hardships, ranging from chronic illness and physical disability to financial instability and personal loss. Engaging directly with these realities through meaningful social interaction and community support provides an immediate and sobering dose of perspective.

Spending an afternoon visiting a chronically ill acquaintance or supporting a neighbor enduring severe hardship alters one’s internal baseline of appreciation. Individuals who witness firsthand the patience and resilience of those facing profound difficulties often return to their own daily lives with a radically renewed appreciation for blessings they previously took for granted. Something as fundamental as physical health, mobility, steady employment, or a modest home suddenly emerges not as an ordinary baseline, but as a profound gift worthy of continuous gratitude. This experiential shift in perspective breaks the cycle of envy and dissatisfaction that is frequently fueled by passive consumption of idealized digital content.

Trusting in Allah’s Provisions

Central to maintaining this state of gratitude is the foundational belief in the divine allocation of sustenance and provisions. Within Islamic theology, God is explicitly recognized as Ar-Razzaq, the All-Provider, who distributes provisions wisely and justly among all creation. Recognizing this divine attribute helps individuals understand that their personal worth and life trajectory are not defined by material accumulation or the superficial markers of success so frequently broadcast across public platforms. By grounding one’s identity in spiritual trust rather than material comparison, individuals become far more resilient against the pressures of societal expectations and digital peer pressure.

Actively engaging with the less fortunate reinforces this spiritual trust by anchoring individuals in reality. When people step away from their digital screens and immerse themselves in acts of service and human connection, the illusion of inadequacy begins to dissolve. Far too many individuals experience a quiet sense of inadequacy after spending time browsing newsfeeds, walking away with nagging internal doubts about whether they are attractive enough, intelligent enough, successful enough, or fortunate enough. Such persistent self-doubt fails to honor the daily abundance of goodness and well-being that individuals actually receive. Allowing digital algorithms to dictate one’s emotional well-being ultimately detracts from a person’s capacity to recognize and appreciate the genuine blessings present in their everyday lives.

Addressing these very themes during her presentation at the MASCON convention, speaker Lobna Mulla emphasized a timeless truth encapsulated in the adage that not everything that shines is gold. Through her address, available to audiences via a recorded discourse titled Not Everything that Shines is Gold, Mulla explored the subtle ways in which modern lifestyles and digital presentations can distort human perception and breed unnecessary discontent. Her talk offers practical reflections designed to help viewers recalibrate their priorities, look beyond surface appearances, and find lasting fulfillment through faith and gratitude. Observers note that engaging with her message provides an uplifting reminder of what truly matters, encouraging believers to anchor their satisfaction in spiritual principles rather than transient material displays.

As contemporary society continues to grapple with the psychological impacts of hyper-connectivity and curated digital personas, the timeless wisdom offered by traditional teachings remains profoundly relevant. By consciously choosing to limit social comparison, redirecting one’s focus toward those facing greater hardships, and trusting in the wisdom of divine provisions, individuals can reclaim their peace of mind. Sharing these valuable reflections with friends and family serves as a meaningful way to extend this positive perspective throughout the broader community, fostering a culture of gratitude, contentment, and genuine human connection.
