Islamic Relief Scales Up Emergency Response as Nepal Flood Death Toll Reaches 1,399

By: Dwi Wanna • Oct 4, 2026 • 3 min read

Islamic Relief’s emergency response to the devastating floods that struck northern Nepal in August 2026 has now reached 8,000 people, providing critical aid to communities upended by one of the worst natural disasters to hit the region in recent years.

Shelter kits including essential items such as tarpaulins, rope, blankets, pillows, and foam mattresses have been successfully delivered to displaced families across the heavily impacted districts of Rasuwa and Nuwakot. These distributions have offered a vital lifeline to households whose homes were destroyed, swept away, or rendered structurally unsafe by rushing floodwaters and subsequent landslides.

Over the course of the next two weeks, Islamic Relief is also planning on delivering nutritional food packs to 550 affected families alongside additional shelter kits to a further 950 families. These upcoming distributions are designed to target the most vulnerable households, ensuring that families struggling to secure basic sustenance and adequate protection from the elements receive timely and effective support.

With three weeks having passed since the initial disaster struck the Himalayan nation, the focus of humanitarian operations is now shifting from immediate, life-saving assistance towards longer-term support and community stabilization. To manage this critical phase effectively, Islamic Relief has developed a comprehensive three-year Response and Recovery Strategy to support with this transition.

The primary focus of this multi-year strategy will be on providing transitional shelters for those unable to return home, restoring important water and sanitation services to prevent the outbreak of waterborne diseases, and helping rebuild shattered livelihoods so that families can regain their financial independence and stability.

The situation remains critical across the disaster zone. Displaced families continue to face exceptionally difficult living conditions, marked by limited access to safe drinking water, proper sanitation facilities, and other essential services. Many residents remain unable to safely return to their homes due to persistent environmental hazards and the complete destruction of local infrastructure.

The broader human toll of the disaster is staggering. According to official figures, the death toll in Nepal has now reached 1,399. An estimated 5,179 people are still missing, with coordinated search and rescue operations still actively underway in the most remote and severely affected regions. Across the country, more than 84,000 people have been left in urgent need of some form of humanitarian assistance.

Currently, 2,150 people are taking shelter across 30 separate displacement camps or holding centres established by authorities and humanitarian agencies. As unstable land, ongoing river erosion, and damaged settlements continue to pose severe daily challenges, many of those currently displaced may need to be relocated yet again to safer locations before permanent recovery planning can begin.

Preliminary assessments conducted by Nepalese authorities have estimated that the floods have caused the equivalent of $2.70 billion worth of damage to housing, agriculture, public infrastructure, and local businesses, presenting a monumental rebuilding challenge for the government and international partners alike.

Humanitarian organizations emphasize that much more resources are required to adequately help those who are still suffering in the aftermath of the catastrophe. Members of the public are encouraged to give generously to support ongoing relief efforts and help humanitarian agencies reach vulnerable families in Nepal with vital assistance.
