Two young men have received widespread community praise after acting without hesitation to help an elderly couple and another family member escape safely from a rapidly escalating house fire in Leeds.

The dramatic incident unfolded on a residential street when 22-year-old Mohsin Qayyum and 20-year-old Mohammed Yusuf Iqbal were driving past the property. Noticing a potentially dangerous situation unfolding near the home, the pair immediately pulled over to investigate and offer their assistance.

According to local reports and eyewitness accounts, a bush on the property had caught fire, and the flames were quickly spreading out of control toward the house. Realizing the immediate peril facing the occupants inside, the two young men sprang into action.

Reflecting on the terrifying moments, one of the residents trapped inside, grandmother Sheila Robinson, expressed her profound relief and gratitude. Speaking about the ordeal, she shared that they were the household where the fire occurred, and emphasized that her family and she will be forever grateful to the young men who intervened.

The terrifying event was also shared on social media by Kayla, whose grandparents and brother were inside the property at the time of the blaze. Taking to Facebook to express her deep appreciation, Kayla thanked the rescuers for their swift and fearless actions.

In her heartfelt post, she explained that the men had driven past the garden, noticed the dangerous fire, and ran straight into the property to ensure everyone was safe without giving it a second thought. She noted that while property and material items can eventually be replaced, the most important outcome was that everyone made it out unharmed. She also extended a massive thank you to everyone living on the street who quickly rang the fire brigade and offered their concerns and support during the emergency.

Recalling the sequence of events to the Telegraph & Argus, Mohammed Yusuf Iqbal explained how the rescue unfolded from his perspective. He noted that as they drove past, they spotted the burning bush, which clearly looked uncontrolled and hazardous. They immediately stopped the car, walked around the perimeter of the fire, and noticed people trapped inside. After attempting to contact the emergency services, they learned that the fire brigade was already aware of the situation. However, recognizing the immediate danger to human life, their next priority was ensuring that everyone was safely evacuated from the house before the fire could block their exit paths or cause severe harm.

Another individual, Ben Russell, was also acknowledged by the family for his vital assistance during the rescue efforts, working alongside the two young men to ensure the occupants reached safety.

Back at home, the actions of the young rescuers have brought immense pride to their families. Yusuf’s mother, Saima, shared her thoughts on her son’s extraordinary courage during the frightening incident. As a mother, she expressed that she is incredibly proud of both Yusuf and Mohsin for the steps they took that afternoon. She noted that they demonstrated remarkable bravery and a level of maturity well beyond their years in a high-pressure, frightening situation, choosing to place the safety and wellbeing of others far above their own personal safety.

She described her son as having a naturally caring disposition and a consistent readiness to put the needs of others first, traits that undoubtedly guided his instincts when the emergency arose.

With the combined efforts of the young men and local residents, the elderly couple and their family member were safely guided out of the house well before the arrival of the fire brigade. Upon arriving at the scene, professional firefighters took over and successfully brought the blaze under control, preventing further structural damage to the property and surrounding neighborhood.

Local authorities and neighbors alike have since commended the quick thinking, selflessness, and bravery displayed by Mohsin Qayyum, Mohammed Yusuf Iqbal, and Ben Russell, whose rapid intervention ensured a potential tragedy was averted and that all occupants emerged from the incident safe and sound.
