Resilience Amid the Rubble: How One Displaced Gaza Teen Refuses to Let Conflict Steal His Future

By: Lina Irawan • Nov 1, 2026 • 6 min read

GAZA — Long before the shelling began and forced his family into a fragile tent, nineteen-year-old Muhammed’s world centered around schoolwork, football matches with cousins, and the quiet comfort of a simple, peaceful life shared with his maternal grandparents, mother, and two younger sisters. Having lost his father when he was just two years old, Muhammed learned early on what it meant to navigate life without a paternal safety net. Yet, within the warm embrace of his extended family, he grew up focused, studious, and full of ordinary childhood ambitions.

Today, that ordinary life has been entirely upended by the ongoing crisis in Gaza. Stripped of his home and displaced into a makeshift tent that offers little defense against the elements, Muhammed has taken on a heavy burden. He is no longer just a student; he is the primary pillar of strength for his aging grandfather and his two younger sisters, striving to maintain a sense of stability while grappling with the harsh, day-to-day realities of displacement.

Despite the total destruction of his neighborhood and the relentless daily struggles of camp life, Muhammed has resolutely refused to surrender his ambitions. He maintains an unshakable belief that education is his most powerful tool—not only to build an independent future for himself, but to lift his family out of hardship and provide them with lasting security.

The Daily Struggle for Survival in a Makeshift Tent

The transformation from a stable household to a life on the move happened overnight. When the bombardment commenced, Muhammed and his family were forced to flee with little more than the clothes they stood in, leaving behind every personal possession, memory, and sense of physical safety.

Life inside the camp presents constant, grueling physical challenges. Daily survival demands hours of labor just to secure the absolute basics. Muhammed and his family must routinely fetch water from distant points and scour the area for scarce firewood to cook whatever meals they can manage. The dense smoke from open-fire cooking frequently fills their small living quarters, irritating their lungs and affecting their breathing.

Furthermore, their temporary tent offers virtually no insulation against the elements. As seasonal weather shifts toward cold winds and heavy rain, the thin canvas walls fail to keep out the dampness, turning their living space into a bitter, chilling environment. Basic household comforts—such as dry mattresses, warm blankets, proper clothing, and secure storage for their few remaining belongings—remain entirely out of reach.

A Remarkable Academic Triumph Against the Odds

Even as basic survival consumed much of each day, Muhammed’s commitment to his education never wavered. As high-school examination season approached, he refused to let his displacement derail years of academic dedication.

Knowing that stable internet access was non-existent in the camp, Muhammed walked long distances each day, navigating hazardous terrain to find functional connections that would allow him to access his coursework and take his exams. Upon returning to the freezing, damp confines of his family’s tent, he sought out every quiet moment he could salvage, studying late into the night under difficult conditions.

His extraordinary perseverance eventually yielded remarkable results. Muhammed graduated from high school with an impressive score of 84 percent—an achievement made all the more staggering by the fact that he studied amidst rubble, displacement, and constant anxiety.

That milestone opened the door to university, offering a renewed spark of hope. Because his first semester was covered free of charge, Muhammed was able to enroll in a digital marketing degree program, taking his first concrete step toward a professional career. However, the path forward remains precarious. With future tuition fees looming and no personal computer to complete his digital assignments and coursework, Muhammed faces a daunting financial cliff that threatens to halt his education just as it has begun.

The Vital Lifeline of Orphan Sponsorship

In navigating these compounding pressures, the monthly orphan sponsorship program provided by Islamic Relief has emerged as a crucial stabilizing force for Muhammed and his family. The financial assistance helps alleviate some of the overwhelming economic strain, enabling them to secure essential daily needs and freeing Muhammed to dedicate more time and focus to his university studies.

Islamic Relief’s support system in Palestine has experienced a dramatic expansion in response to the escalating crisis. Before the current conflict, the organization supported roughly 8,700 sponsored orphans. Today, that number has surged to nearly 25,200 orphaned children across the region—representing an approximate 190% increase and tripling the organization’s capacity to help vulnerable youth in Gaza thanks to international donor generosity.

Despite this significant scale-up, the scale of need remains overwhelming. More than 5,100 orphaned children currently sit on Islamic Relief’s waiting list, desperately hoping for a sponsorship lifeline. For students like Muhammed, the sponsorship represents far more than financial aid; it is a vital bridge keeping their educational ambitions and future prospects alive.

A Family Still in Urgent Need of Basic Support

While Muhammed continues to attend university classes when possible, the immediate living conditions of his household remain dire and demand urgent intervention. The family is in critical need of safer, more weather-resistant shelter to withstand the harsh winter conditions. A larger, sturdier tent equipped with protective, waterproof coverings would shield them from the biting cold and driving rain.

Additionally, the household lacks fundamental provisions, including proper mattresses, warm winter blankets, clothing storage solutions, durable cooking equipment, and seasonal clothing and sturdy shoes for Muhammed and his younger sisters. For Muhammed specifically, acquiring a laptop is an absolute prerequisite to sustain his digital marketing studies, alongside guaranteed assistance with upcoming university tuition payments to ensure he remains enrolled.

For Muhammed, earning a university degree is not merely about securing a personal qualification. It is a strategic lifeline designed to break the cycle of poverty and displacement, offering a dependable way to find meaningful work and provide long-term stability for the relatives who depend on him.

By holding steadfast to his books despite losing his childhood home, Muhammed embodies a quiet resilience that defies the devastation around him. With continued humanitarian support, vulnerable young people across Gaza retain a fighting chance to protect their education, rebuild their ambitions, and preserve their hope for the future.
