GAZA — Having lost his father when he was just two years old, Muhammed has spent a lifetime understanding responsibility far beyond his years. Today, while navigating the harsh and unrelenting reality of displacement in Gaza, the young man tries his best to serve as a pillar of strength for his two younger sisters and his aging grandfather. Despite the complete destruction of his family home and the daily indignities of living in a fragile tent, Muhammed has steadfastly refused to give up on his aspirations. He firmly believes that education remains his only viable pathway to building a secure, sustainable future for himself and the dependents who rely on him.
Before the current crisis erupted, Muhammed and his family lived a remarkably simple and peaceful life. They resided comfortably in his maternal grandparents’ home, sharing daily routines marked by quiet stability. Muhammed attended school regularly, throwing himself into his studies with discipline and focus. In his free time, he enjoyed the ordinary joys of youth, such as swimming and playing football with his friends and cousins. His younger sisters likewise grew up surrounded by a deeply loving, supportive familial environment that shielded them from the harsher aspects of the world.
That sense of safety and predictability vanished overnight when the shelling began. With little warning, the family was forced to flee their home, escaping with virtually nothing save for the clothes on their backs.
The transition into displacement brought immediate, grueling hardship. Daily life transformed into a relentless struggle for basic survival. The family had to manually fetch water from distant points and scour for whatever firewood they could find to cook sparse meals. The acrid smoke from open fires hung heavily around their makeshift living space, affecting their breathing and adding a persistent health hazard to their daily misery. Their small, makeshift shelter offered little to no protection against the elements, leaving them vulnerable to the biting cold and relentless rain of the winter season.
Determined to Continue His Education
Despite the overwhelming daily struggle simply to survive, Muhammed remained fiercely determined to finish his high school education.
The logistical hurdles were immense. Every single day, he had to walk long distances just to find an area with a stable internet connection so he could access his coursework and take his crucial high-school exams. Upon returning to the damp, freezing confines of their tent, he would study in whatever quiet moments he could carve out, working by meager light under harsh and unforgiving conditions.
Ultimately, his extraordinary resilience and hard work paid off. Muhammed graduated from high school with an impressive score of 84 percent—an academic triumph made all the more remarkable by the chaotic, impoverished circumstances under which he was forced to prepare.
The achievement unlocked a vital new door, granting him the opportunity to begin university studies. His first semester was graciously provided free of charge, allowing him to enroll and begin taking courses in digital marketing.
Yet, the road ahead remains fraught with financial anxiety. Muhammed worries deeply about how he will manage to pay future tuition fees. Furthermore, he lacks a personal laptop, a tool that is fundamentally indispensable for completing his course requirements, accessing lectures, and submitting assignments on time.
Islamic Relief’s Orphan Sponsorship Provides Vital Support
During this prolonged period of crisis, the monthly sponsorship Muhammed receives through Islamic Relief has emerged as a crucial anchor for his entire household.
The financial assistance helps the family meet their most essential daily needs, significantly reducing the crushing financial pressure that weighs on them. By alleviating some of the immediate economic strain, the sponsorship affords Muhammed the vital breathing room he needs to focus on his university studies and continue striving toward his long-term goals.
Before the outbreak of the war, Islamic Relief was actively supporting 8,700 sponsored orphans. Today, the organization’s orphan sponsorship program reaches nearly 25,200 orphaned children across the region, representing an approximate 190 percent increase in capacity. Thanks to the steady generosity of international donors and sponsors, the organization has effectively tripled the number of children it supports in Gaza.
Even with this substantial scale-up, the need remains staggeringly high. Currently, more than 5,100 orphaned children remain on the organization’s waiting list, hoping desperately for the lifeline that a sponsorship represents.
For Muhammed, earning a university degree is about much more than securing a professional qualification. It represents a practical mechanism to build true independence and, eventually, to provide long-term financial stability for the family members he loves so dearly. He hopes that completing his higher education will enable him to find meaningful employment and lift his household out of destitution.
A Family Still in Urgent Need
Despite the small comforts provided by external aid, life inside the family’s tent remains deeply precarious.
Muhammed and his relatives are in urgent need of safer, more secure shelter infrastructure, particularly as winter brings worsening cold and wet weather. Acquiring a larger, sturdier tent alongside proper protective waterproof coverings would go a long way toward shielding them from driving rain and plummeting temperatures.
In addition to structural shelter needs, the household requires basic everyday items to restore a measure of dignity to their living conditions. These include mattresses, warm blankets, storage solutions for their meager clothing and personal belongings, proper cooking equipment, and seasonally appropriate winter clothing and shoes for Muhammed and his sisters.
For Muhammed personally, acquiring a laptop is an absolute prerequisite if he is to remain enrolled in his university courses and complete his digital marketing assignments. Securing assistance for upcoming tuition payments would similarly ensure that his education is not abruptly cut short due to economic destitution. Fulfilling these fundamental needs would provide the family with a much-needed baseline of safety while safeguarding Muhammed’s academic future.
Muhammed has lost his home, his community, and the familiar rhythms of the life he once knew. Yet, he has stubbornly retained his faith in the transformative power of education. His unwavering dedication to studying while enduring the indignities of displacement stands as a testament to his profound hope for a different, brighter tomorrow. With continued community backing and humanitarian aid, young people like Muhammed can manage to preserve their ambitions, their schooling, and their faith in the future.
