Amid Displacement and Loss in Gaza, 12-Year-Old Amira Holds Onto Her Dream of Becoming a Nurse

By: Sagoh • Nov 2, 2026 • 6 min read

At just 12 years old, Amira has already endured a lifetime of profound challenges. Having faced the early and devastating loss of her father, followed by relentless displacement and the complete destruction of her family home, she navigates a reality that few children should ever have to witness. Yet, despite the unimaginable hardships and the daily struggles of survival in Gaza, Amira continues her education online and tenaciously holds on to her dream of becoming a nurse.

Amira’s world shifted irrevocably when she was nine years old and lost her father to cancer. She remembers him vividly not merely as a parent, but as a fundamental source of love, unwavering safety, and deep emotional strength. His passing fundamentally altered the trajectory of her childhood, stripping away a layer of security that could never be easily replaced. Then, as the wider war in Gaza began, Amira and her grieving family were thrust into yet another harrowing period defined by profound loss, widespread destruction, and pervasive fear.

Forced to Leave Their Home

Before the conflict upended their lives entirely, Amira lived alongside her mother, Manal, and her siblings in the Al-Salam neighbourhood of Rafah. It was a community that, for all its ordinary challenges, provided a sense of stability and belonging. When the family was ultimately forced to flee under the weight of advancing violence, they had to make agonizing choices about what to carry. Leaving behind the majority of their worldly possessions, they packed only a few essential items: a handful of spare clothes, basic bedding, and a small assortment of kitchen necessities.

In those initial days of flight, the family held onto a fragile optimism, believing that their displacement would be short-lived and that they would soon be able to return to the familiarity of their home. Instead, that hope was systematically shattered when they learned their house had been completely destroyed. With no home to return to and no alternative housing available, the family remained indefinitely displaced, eventually establishing a makeshift shelter inside a fabric tent.

Life within the confines of the tent presented a daily battle against the elements. During the scorching summer months, the canvas structure trapped the heat, turning the interior into an exhausting furnace. In stark contrast, the winter brought bitter, biting cold that pierced the thin walls. When rain fell, it routinely leaked inside, soaking their meager belongings and turning the ground beneath them into thick, unforgiving mud.

Securing basic daily necessities became an exhausting logistical hurdle for the family. Accessing clean water required standing in queues for hours at a time, often waiting for passing water trucks to arrive. When they lacked the financial resources to purchase food independently, they were forced to rely entirely on community kitchens simply to stave off hunger.

Losing Everything Again

Just as the family was beginning to adapt to the grim realities of tent life, tragedy struck once more in a devastating fire that swept through their temporary shelter. The blaze consumed what little they had managed to salvage from their former lives. Their remaining clothing, the minimal cooking equipment they relied on to prepare meals, and other personal belongings were reduced to cinders.

"Everything we owned was turned to ashes," Manal shares, reflecting on the profound desolation of that moment. The fire left the family once again stripped of the fundamental tools required to manage daily life, compounding their vulnerability in an already precarious environment. In the wake of the fire, their immediate material needs multiplied significantly. They are now in urgent need of sturdier shelter materials and waterproof coverings to protect them from future weather elements, alongside a proper bathroom, replacement cooking equipment, and basic clothing and shoes for daily wear.

Continuing to Study Despite Displacement

Despite the crushing weight of these continuous crises and the deeply austere conditions surrounding her, Amira remains fiercely committed to her education. Studying online, she has persevered through her coursework and is now in the seventh grade. Her academic dedication is matched by her willingness to shoulder domestic responsibilities under exceptionally difficult circumstances. With no access to electricity or modern conveniences such as a washing machine, she assists her mother by washing the family’s clothes entirely by hand—a physically demanding task performed daily.

Even amid these arduous chores and the uncertainty of her surroundings, Amira maintains a clear vision for her future. She dreams of becoming a nurse, driven by a desire to help others and heal the sick, and she desperately hopes she will be able to sustain her studies through whatever comes next. Outside of her academic pursuits, she finds solace in drawing, though the ongoing shortages mean she rarely has access to the basic materials and supplies she needs to properly practice and nurture her artistic interests. Her immediate material needs remain starkly basic, centered heavily around essential winter clothing, proper underwear, and reliable shoes.

Supporting Orphaned Children in Gaza

The broader context of Amira’s struggle reflects a wider crisis affecting thousands of vulnerable children across the region. Organizations like Islamic Relief have long worked to mitigate these hardships, having supported orphaned children in Gaza through a dedicated Orphan Sponsorship Programme since 1999.

The mechanism of this support operates through a one-to-one sponsorship model, directly connecting an individual donor with a child. Through this arrangement, the child’s guardian receives a regular monthly financial payment. In the specific context of Gaza, families are given the flexibility to allocate this vital financial support toward the needs they deem most critical and urgent at any given moment, whether that involves purchasing food, acquiring necessary clothing, covering healthcare expenses, or sustaining education.

In response to the escalating needs driven by the current crisis, Islamic Relief has substantially expanded the reach of the sponsorship programme. More than 25,000 children throughout Gaza are currently receiving regular sponsorship support, highlighting the immense scale of the need. At the same time, however, over 5,000 children remain on the waiting list, underscoring the vast gap between the current response capacity and the sheer volume of children requiring assistance.

Where operational access and logistics permit, sponsored families also receive supplementary seasonal support. This includes specialized food parcels distributed during Ramadan and Qurbani, celebratory Eid gifts for the children, and essential winter items designed to ward off the seasonal cold.

Holding on to Hope

Amira’s story is emblematic of the harsh reality confronting countless children in Gaza who have been forced to navigate the loss of parents, the destruction of their homes, and the complete erosion of their physical and emotional security. Yet, in defiance of these overwhelming circumstances, she continues to attend to her studies and maintain an active focus on what tomorrow might bring.

Her aspirations remain remarkably grounded and hopeful: she wishes simply to continue her education, fulfill her ambition of becoming a nurse, and ultimately live in a safe, secure environment alongside her family. Through ongoing community mechanisms and dedicated humanitarian initiatives like Islamic Relief’s Orphan Sponsorship Programme, vital pathways remain available to help provide regular, dependable support to orphaned children and their families across Gaza, offering a tangible lifeline amid profound adversity.
