Two young men driving through Leeds have been hailed as heroes after their quick thinking and decisive action saved an elderly couple and another family member from a rapidly spreading house fire.
The incident unfolded on a busy afternoon when 22-year-old Mohsin Qayyum and 20-year-old Mohammed Yusuf Iqbal were travelling past a residential property in the city. Unbeknownst to most passersby, a fire had broken out in the garden area and was quickly escalating, threatening the main structure of the home where several residents were trapped inside.
Realising the severity of the situation without a moment to hesitate, the two friends immediately pulled their vehicle over, abandoned their journey, and rushed toward the property to render whatever assistance they could provide.

Reflecting on the terrifying ordeal, Sheila Robinson, the grandmother who was trapped inside the burning home alongside her husband and grandson, expressed profound gratitude for the intervention of the young men. "We are the ones where the fire occurred," Mrs. Robinson said. "My family and I will be forever grateful to these young men."
The dramatic rescue has since drawn widespread community praise, particularly after members of the affected family shared their accounts of the afternoon on social media. Kayla, whose grandparents and brother were inside the property at the time of the blaze, took to Facebook to voice her relief and appreciation for the life-saving efforts of the individuals involved.
"Just a little thank you to these guys and Ben Russell who saved my grandma, grandad and my brother from a fire this afternoon," Kayla wrote in her public post. "Drove past the garden, seen it, and ran straight in and made sure everyone was okay without a second thought!"
Highlighting the miraculous outcome given how quickly fire can spread in residential areas, she added, "Everyone is okay and the rest is just items that can be replaced. And a massive thank you to everyone on the street for ringing the fire brigade and for everyone’s concerns."

Recalling the harrowing moments leading up to the rescue, Mohammed Yusuf Iqbal detailed the sequence of events to local journalists at the Telegraph & Argus.
"We drove past it, and we’ve seen the bush on fire and it didn’t look very controlled so we stopped the car and walked around the fire," Yusuf explained. "We saw people inside, called the fire brigade who said they already knew about it. Our next action was getting people out the house."
With the emergency services already alerted by concerned neighbours and local residents on the street, Yusuf and Mohsin understood that every second counted. Instead of waiting at a safe distance for professional firefighters to arrive, the pair bypassed the encroaching flames, entered the property perimeter, and actively worked to guide the trapped occupants to safety.
News of the rescue quickly reached the families of the young men, drawing immense pride from those who know them best. Yusuf’s mother, Saima, spoke about her son’s character and her reaction to learning what he and his friend had accomplished during the crisis.

"As a mother, I am incredibly proud of both Yusuf and Mohsin for their actions," Saima said. "They showed remarkable bravery and maturity in a frightening situation, putting the wellbeing of others before themselves."
She noted that the values displayed during the emergency were rooted in a lifelong dedication to compassion and community responsibility. "I have always taught Yusuf the importance of being hardworking, kind, and respectful to everyone, and to help others whenever possible," she added. "He has a very caring nature and is always willing to put others first."
Thanks to the combined efforts of the young men, who successfully assisted the occupants in evacuating the premises, all residents were safely out of harms way by the time professional firefighting crews arrived on the scene. Local firefighters swiftly brought the remaining blaze under control, preventing further structural damage to the property and surrounding neighbourhood.
While the incident resulted in property damage and a terrifying experience for the Robinson family, local authorities and residents alike have emphasized that the prompt and selfless actions of Mohsin Qayyum, Mohammed Yusuf Iqbal, and Ben Russell ultimately averted a potential tragedy on a fateful afternoon in Leeds.
