GAZA — Having lost his father at the tender age of just two years old, Muhammed has spent much of his youth understanding the heavy burdens of responsibility. Today, the young man finds himself trying his absolute best to act as a pillar of unwavering strength for his two younger sisters and his aging grandfather, all while navigating the profound and daily harsh realities of displacement in Gaza.
Despite the catastrophic destruction of his family home and being forced to live within the cramped, vulnerable confines of a canvas tent, Muhammed has stubbornly refused to give up on his life’s ambitions. At the core of his resilience is an unshakeable belief that education remains his single most powerful tool—a pathway that can help him build a safer, more stable, and vastly better future for himself and the vulnerable family members who depend on him.
Before the current crisis erupted, upending life across the region, Muhammed and his relatives lived a simple, quiet, and peaceful life sheltered within his maternal grandparents’ home. During those years, Muhammed attended school regularly, applying himself diligently to his studies and taking pride in his academic progress. Beyond the classroom, his life possessed the normal rhythms of youth; in his free time, he enjoyed swimming and playing football alongside his friends and cousins. His younger sisters likewise grew up surrounded by a deeply loving, stable, and supportive domestic environment.
That fundamental sense of safety, routine, and normalcy vanished overnight when the shelling began. With little warning and no time to salvage their belongings, the family was forced to flee their neighborhood, escaping with little more than the clothes they were wearing on their backs.
The transition into displacement brought immediate, crushing hardships. Daily survival became an exhausting ordeal. The family had to manually fetch water from distant points and gather firewood for rudimentary cooking. The thick, acrid smoke from open fires constantly irritated their lungs and affected their breathing, posing health risks in an already compromised environment. Meanwhile, their small, improvised living space offered virtually no insulation or protection against the biting cold weather, fierce winds, and heavy winter rains.
Determined to Continue His Education
Even as the struggle for basic survival consumed daylight hours, Muhammed remained fiercely determined to finish his schooling and protect his academic future.
Refusing to let the circumstances derail his education, he walked long distances each day simply to find areas with sporadic internet access, allowing him to log on, check assignments, and prepare for his high-school exams. Upon returning to the cold and damp environment of the family tent, he would study late into the night, seizing every quiet, dimly lit moment he could find amidst the chaos of camp life.
Ultimately, his extraordinary hard work and sacrifice paid off. Muhammed graduated from high school with an impressive score of 84 percent—an academic triumph made all the more remarkable given the grueling, unstable conditions under which he had prepared.
Securing the opportunity to begin university studies injected a fresh wave of hope into his life. His crucial first semester was granted free of charge, enabling him to embark on a course of study in digital marketing, a field he hopes will open doors in a modern economy.
However, sustaining his university career presents an intimidating mountain of financial and logistical challenges. Muhammed worries deeply about how he will manage to pay future tuition fees. Furthermore, he urgently requires a reliable laptop, an indispensable tool for completing his coursework, submitting digital assignments, and keeping pace with his university curriculum.
Islamic Relief’s Orphan Sponsorship Provides Vital Support
During this prolonged period of profound difficulty, the monthly orphan sponsorship that Muhammed receives through Islamic Relief has emerged as an indispensable financial lifeline for his family.
The consistent assistance helps them secure essential daily needs and alleviates a significant portion of the crushing financial pressure weighing on the household. By easing these daily anxieties, the sponsorship provides Muhammed with vital breathing room, allowing him to dedicate more of his focus and energy to his university studies and his long-term goals.
The demand for such life-saving interventions has surged dramatically in the wake of the conflict. Before the war, Islamic Relief was actively supporting 8,700 sponsored orphans across the region. Today, that vital humanitarian programme supports nearly 25,200 orphaned children, representing an extraordinary expansion of approximately 190 percent. Thanks to the steady generosity of international sponsors, the organization has effectively tripled the number of vulnerable children it supports inside Gaza.
Despite this massive scaling of operations, the need remains overwhelmingly vast. There are currently more than 5,100 orphaned children sitting on the organization’s waiting list, desperately hoping for the safety net and lifeline that sponsorship provides.
For Muhammed, pursuing higher education transcends the mere acquisition of a professional qualification. To him, earning a degree represents a tangible pathway toward building genuine independence and eventually gaining the financial capacity to properly support the people he loves most. He passionately hopes that completing his university education will enable him to secure stable employment and restore a measure of security to his family’s daily existence.
A Family Still in Urgent Need
Despite moments of hope, life inside the makeshift tent remains perilous and exceptionally difficult.
Muhammed and his family are in urgent need of safer, more secure shelter infrastructure, particularly as winter brings freezing temperatures and driving rain. Acquiring a larger, sturdier tent alongside heavy-duty protective coverings would go a long way toward shielding the household from the elements.
Beyond shelter, the family lacks basic household commodities. They require essential items such as durable mattresses, warm blankets, proper storage containers for their clothes and minimal personal belongings, safe cooking equipment, and adequate winter clothing and sturdy shoes to protect Muhammed and his sisters from the cold.
For Muhammed specifically, obtaining a laptop remains an absolute prerequisite if he is to remain enrolled in his university classes and complete his degree. Combined with financial assistance for upcoming tuition payments, these interventions would safeguard his academic future and provide his family with a measure of stability during an unrelenting crisis.
Holding on to Hope
Muhammed has suffered immense losses, including his childhood home and the familiar, peaceful life he once knew. Yet, through all the displacement and hardship, he has refused to surrender his belief in the transformative power of education.
His unwavering resolve to study amidst the ruins of displacement serves as a powerful testament to his commitment to forging a different path for himself and his loved ones. With ongoing backing, young people like Muhammed are better equipped to hold onto their schooling, their ambitions, and their enduring hope for the future.
Through continued global solidarity and individual contributions, organizations like Islamic Relief strive to remain an essential lifeline for orphaned children throughout Palestine.
